What can I put in my recycling bin?

It’s not always clear what you can put in your recycling bin and finding the information online isn’t always easy. For instance, can you leave the lids on your glass jars and plastic milk bottles? It took us far too long to find the definitive answer to this simple question online.

Some of the information available online was conflicting because it was out of date. Searching for the lids answer returned this handy Winchester waste campaign information poster. According to the poster, you need to removed your milk bottle plastic lids, but this is no longer the case according to Winchester City council recycling bin collection information.

We were unable to find any similar list for kerb side glass recycling, so this would appear to still be the latest guidance.

Can I put plastic bottle caps in the green recycling bin?

Food and drink bottles e.g. milk and drink bottles, shampoo bottles and cleaning product bottles. Lids and labels can be left on. Please empty any liquid content and squash the bottle before replacing the lid.
